Acetone and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) are both fast-drying, water-miscible cleaning solvents, but they are not interchangeable. Acetone is a stronger ketone solvent that boils at 56 °C (133 °F) and dissolves many plastics, resins, and adhesives — use it for stripping, degreasing, and resin cleanup. IPA is a milder alcohol that boils at 82.6 °C (181 °F), leaves most plastics and coatings intact, and doubles as a surface disinfectant — use it for electronics, lab and medical wipe-down, and general cleaning where material compatibility and lower toxicity matter.

The difference comes down to chemistry. Acetone (C3H6O) is a ketone — a powerful, aggressive solvent that breaks down a wide range of organic materials, including polystyrene, ABS, many paints, and cured resins. Isopropyl alcohol (C3H8O) is a secondary alcohol — a gentler solvent that dissolves oils, flux residue, and light contamination while leaving most plastics, elastomers, and coatings untouched.

When should you use acetone?

Reach for acetone when you need maximum solvency and the fastest possible flash-off, and when the surface can tolerate an aggressive solvent:

  • Stripping paint, lacquer, and coatings from metal and glass.
  • Degreasing metal parts before welding, bonding, or finishing.
  • Cleaning up uncured resins and adhesives — epoxy, fiberglass, polyester resin, and superglue.
  • Thinning and equipment cleanup in composite and coatings shops.
  • Nail-product and cosmetic formulation at the appropriate grade.

Avoid acetone on polystyrene, ABS, acrylic, polycarbonate, many painted finishes, and most rubbers — it will craze, soften, or dissolve them. It is also the wrong choice near sensitive electronics for the same reason.

When should you use isopropyl alcohol (IPA)?

Reach for IPA — typically 99% for cleaning and 70% for disinfection — when material compatibility, residue-free drying, or antimicrobial action matter:

  • Electronics and PCB cleaning — removes flux and oils without attacking plastics or conformal coatings (use 99%).
  • Surface disinfection in labs, cleanrooms, and medical settings (70% is more effective than 99% as a disinfectant because water slows evaporation and aids cell penetration).
  • General degreasing and glass/optics cleaning where a residue-free finish is required.
  • Removing light adhesive residue and inks from delicate surfaces.
  • Diluent and carrier in cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and cleaning formulations.

IPA will not strip cured paint or dissolve resin the way acetone does. If a job needs cutting power, IPA is the wrong tool.

Which is safer to handle and store?

Both are flammable liquids and both require grounded, ventilated storage away from ignition sources. Acetone is the more volatile of the two: its flash point of −18 °C (0 °F) means it releases ignitable vapor even in a cold room, versus 12 °C (53 °F) for IPA. Acetone vapor is also heavier than air and can travel to a distant ignition source. On toxicity, IPA is more toxic if ingested and its vapor is more of a central-nervous-system depressant, while acetone is generally lower in systemic toxicity but strongly defatting to skin. Always work from the current SDS and provide adequate ventilation and PPE for either solvent.
