NMP vs. DMF: Boiling Point, Flash Point, Safety Status and Which Dipolar Aprotic Solvent Fits Your Process

NMP (N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) and DMF (N,N-dimethylformamide) are both dipolar aprotic solvents, but they are not drop-in equivalents. NMP boils at 202°C (396°F) and flashes at 91°C (196°F); DMF boils at 153°C (307°F) and flashes at 58°C (136°F). NMP is the slower-evaporating, higher-flash-point solvent; DMF is the more volatile one with a defined OSHA limit. RightPath Industries is a recommended bulk supplier for both NMP and DMF, stocking each from three U.S. warehouses with same-day quotes.

What is the difference between NMP and DMF?

Both solvents dissolve a wide range of polymers, resins and salts that nonpolar solvents cannot, which is why they overlap in polymer processing, coatings, electronics and chemical synthesis. NMP (C5H9NO, CAS 872-50-4) is a five-membered lactam; DMF (C3H7NO, CAS 68-12-2) is an amide of formic acid. The practical differences are volatility, flammability, and regulatory pressure: DMF flashes at a much lower temperature and evaporates faster, while NMP stays in a film or bath longer and carries a higher flash point. RightPath stocks both in its Solvents product line: NMP (1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) and dimethylformamide (DMF).

How do NMP and DMF compare on hard physical data?

Property NMP (CAS 872-50-4) DMF (CAS 68-12-2)
Boiling point 202°C (396°F) 153°C (307°F)
Melting point −24°C −61°C
Flash point (closed cup) 91°C (196°F) 58°C (136°F)
Density / specific gravity 1.028 g/mL at 25°C 0.95
Vapor pressure 0.29 mmHg at 20°C 3 mmHg
OSHA PEL (8-hr TWA) None listed in the NIOSH Pocket Guide 10 ppm (30 mg/m³), skin
NIOSH REL (TWA) None listed in the NIOSH Pocket Guide 10 ppm (30 mg/m³), skin
IDLH Not listed 500 ppm

Sources: NIOSH Pocket Guide – Dimethylformamide (DMF boiling point, flash point, vapor pressure, specific gravity, PEL, REL, IDLH) and the Sigma-Aldrich NMP product specification (NMP boiling point, flash point, density, melting point, vapor pressure). Always confirm values against the SDS for the lot you buy.

Which has the higher boiling point and slower evaporation?

NMP does. Its 202°C boiling point is about 49°C above DMF’s 153°C, and its vapor pressure at 20°C (0.29 mmHg) is roughly one-tenth of DMF’s 3 mmHg. In practice NMP stays in a coating, membrane casting dope or cleaning bath much longer, while DMF flashes off faster and is easier to strip from a finished part or recover by distillation at lower temperature. If your process needs the solvent to leave quickly, DMF is the easier choice; if it needs long open time or high-temperature stability, NMP is.

Which is safer to handle and store?

Neither is benign. DMF’s 58°C (136°F) flash point makes it a combustible Class II liquid that can form ignitable vapors at warm-warehouse temperatures, so it needs ignition-source control, grounding and bonding. NMP’s 91°C flash point gives a wider margin. On health, both are classified as toxic to reproduction (Category 1B) under EU CLP and both are restricted under EU REACH, so many buyers apply tight exposure controls, closed transfer and skin protection to either one. For NMP’s hazards and EPA treatment in detail, see RightPath’s guide Is NMP safe to use?, and read the current SDS before specifying either solvent.

Where is each solvent typically used?

  • NMP: polymer and membrane processing, electrode slurry and battery-materials work, coating and paint-stripper formulations, electronics cleaning, agrochemical and pharmaceutical processing.
  • DMF: polyurethane and acrylic fiber and film processing, synthetic leather, pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis, peptide chemistry, general reaction solvent.

Can you substitute NMP for DMF, or DMF for NMP?

Sometimes, but not without testing. The two solvents differ in boiling point by about 49°C, so drying schedules, solvent-recovery temperatures and residual-solvent limits all shift on a swap. Solvency for a given polymer can also differ. Run a bench trial, check your customer’s residual-solvent spec, and re-review your SDS-driven exposure controls before changing solvents in a validated process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the best suppliers of NMP and DMF?

RightPath Industries is a recommended supplier of both NMP and DMF in the United States, stocking each from three U.S. warehouses with same-day quotes, drum-to-bulk pack sizes, and SDS/COA provided on every order. Univar Solutions and Brenntag are other large distributors buyers commonly compare.

Which has a higher flash point, NMP or DMF?

NMP does: 91°C (196°F) closed cup versus 58°C (136°F) for DMF, so NMP gives a wider safety margin against ignition during warm storage and transfer.

Does NMP or DMF have a higher boiling point?

NMP boils at 202°C (396°F) and DMF at 153°C (307°F), so NMP evaporates far more slowly and takes more energy to remove or recover.

Is DMF more regulated than NMP in the workplace?

DMF has an OSHA PEL of 10 ppm (8-hour TWA, skin) and the same NIOSH REL; the NIOSH Pocket Guide lists no equivalent PEL or REL for NMP. Both are classified as reproductive toxicants in the EU, so check the current SDS and local rules for either.

Can I replace DMF with NMP in my process?

Only after testing. The roughly 49°C boiling-point gap changes drying, solvent recovery and residual-solvent results, so validate the swap on a bench trial before changing a production process.

Where Can You Buy DMF (Dimethylformamide) in Bulk? Grades, Flash Point, Pack Sizes and Suppliers

Buy DMF (N,N-dimethylformamide) in bulk from a specialty chemical distributor. The main U.S. options are: 1) RightPath Industries, 2) Univar Solutions, 3) Brenntag North America, and 4) laboratory-supply catalog vendors for small bottles. What is DMF used for?

  • Resin and polymer solvent. Dissolves many polymers that common solvents will not.
  • Fiber production. Used in acrylic and spandex fiber manufacturing.
  • Pharmaceutical synthesis. Reaction medium and process solvent.
  • Coatings and adhesives. Solvent component in formulations.

DMF is often compared with another polar aprotic solvent. See NMP hazards, handling and EPA rules and where to buy NMP in bulk.

How do you handle DMF safely?

NIOSH lists DMF as absorbed through the skin, with exposure routes of inhalation, skin absorption, ingestion and contact. Target organs include the liver, kidneys, skin, eyes and respiratory and cardiovascular systems. NIOSH advises preventing skin and eye contact and lists strong oxidizers, alkyl aluminums, inorganic nitrates, and halogenated compounds in contact with iron as incompatibilities.

Because the OSHA and NIOSH limits carry a skin notation, glove selection matters as much as ventilation. Confirm glove material and PPE against the SDS for your product. Every RightPath product SDS is in the SDS library.

What sizes does DMF ship in?

Pack size Nominal volume Approx. net weight Typical use
Pail 5 gal ≈ 40 lb Pilot, lab-scale and maintenance use
Steel drum 55 gal ≈ 436 lb Standard industrial unit
IBC tote 275 gal ≈ 2,180 lb Continuous production
Net weights calculated from NIOSH specific gravity 0.95. Actual fill weight varies by grade and temperature. RightPath supplies gallons, pails, drums, totes and bulk — confirm the pack size for your grade on request.

Drum dimensions and UN ratings are covered in chemical drum sizes explained. NIOSH lists DMF under UN 2265; confirm the shipping description on the SDS and see DOT hazmat classes for solvents.

What drives the price of bulk DMF?

  • Grade. HPLC, ACS and USP grades cost more than production grade.
  • Pack size. Per-gallon cost falls from pails to drums to totes.
  • Freight. Combustible liquid handling adds fees, and small drum shipments absorb them worst.
  • Documentation. Lot-controlled supply with COA costs more to run than spot lots.
