Surfactants: Types, Definitions and Uses

A surfactant (surface-active agent) is a molecule with a water-loving (hydrophilic) head and an oil-loving (hydrophobic) tail that concentrates at the interface between two phases — oil and water, liquid and air, liquid and solid — and lowers the surface or interfacial tension between them. That one property makes surfactants the workhorses behind detergents, emulsifiers, wetting agents, foaming and defoaming agents, and dispersants across nearly every manufacturing sector.

How do surfactants work?

Because one end of the molecule prefers water and the other end avoids it, surfactant molecules line up at interfaces instead of dissolving uniformly. At low concentrations they coat the interface and drop its tension, letting water wet surfaces it would otherwise bead up on. Above a threshold called the critical micelle concentration (CMC), the excess molecules assemble into micelles — spheres with the oily tails pointed inward — which is how detergents lift grease into water and carry it away.

A surfactant is the surface-active molecule itself; a detergent is a formulated cleaning product built around one or more surfactants plus builders, chelants, and additives. What is the critical micelle concentration (CMC)?
