Deionized Water vs. Distilled Water: Purity, Conductivity, ASTM D1193 Types and Which Should You Use?

Deionized (DI) water has had its dissolved ions removed by ion-exchange resin; distilled water has been boiled and recondensed, which leaves salts, most nonvolatile organics and microorganisms behind. Distillation removes a broader range of contaminants; ion exchange reaches lower conductivity. For lab-grade, process or rinse water, specify an ASTM D1193 type or USP grade, not just a method.

Buyers ask “which is purer” because both are sold as “pure water,” but the two processes remove different things. The right choice depends on what your process cannot tolerate: dissolved ions, organic compounds, particles, bacteria or endotoxin. That is why lab and pharmaceutical specifications define water by measured limits rather than by how it was made.

How do deionized water and distilled water differ?

Deionized water vs. distilled water — process and what each removes
Factor Deionized (DI) water Distilled water
How it is made Water passes through cation and anion exchange resins; H+ and OH− released by the resins combine to form water Water is boiled and the steam is condensed and collected
Dissolved ions (salts, minerals) Removed; mixed-bed ion-exchange polishing is how ASTM Type I water reaches 0.056 µS/cm Largely removed; left behind in the still
Uncharged organics Not removed by ion exchange alone Nonvolatile organics removed; volatile organics and dissolved gases can carry over with the steam
Bacteria and particles Not removed unless paired with filtration, UV or reverse osmosis Removed by the phase change
Energy use Low; resins need regeneration or replacement High; water must be boiled
Role in ASTM D1193 Final polishing step for Type I; allowed for Types III and IV Primary method named for Types I and II
CAS number / formula 7732-18-5 / H2O 7732-18-5 / H2O

Both are chemically water, CAS 7732-18-5, molecular weight 18.02 g/mol. Neither has a UN number, so both ship as non-hazardous freight.

Which is purer, deionized or distilled water?

Neither is purer by default. Ion exchange is better at removing dissolved ions, so well-run DI systems reach lower conductivity than a single still. Distillation is better at removing bacteria, particles and nonvolatile organic compounds, which ion exchange alone does not touch.

The highest-purity laboratory water uses both principles. ASTM D1193 says Type I reagent water is prepared by distillation or an equal process, then polished with ion-exchange materials and a 0.2 µm membrane filter. The theoretical maximum resistivity of pure water at 25 °C is about 18.2 MΩ·cm; ASTM Type I requires at least 18.0.

DI water also changes after it is made. Exposed to air, it absorbs carbon dioxide, which forms carbonic acid, lowers pH and raises conductivity. That is why Type I water is usually produced at the point of use, and why delivered water should be specified by type or grade with a certificate of analysis.

What are the ASTM D1193 reagent water types?

Data: ASTM D1193 Standard Specification for Reagent Water. The standard also allows other technologies when the water meets the constituent limits. Pharmaceutical water follows USP instead: Purified Water and Water for Injection share a stage-1 conductivity limit of 1.3 µS/cm at 25 °C (USP <645>) and a total organic carbon limit of 500 ppb (USP <643>). The FDA’s guide to inspections of high purity water systems explains how those systems are validated.

Which water should you use for your application?

Application selection guide
Application Specify Why
HPLC mobile phases, trace-metal and ion analysis ASTM Type I or HPLC-grade water Lowest ions and organics; background interferes with detection
General reagent and buffer preparation ASTM Type II or III Clean enough for most wet chemistry at lower cost
Pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmetic manufacturing USP-purified water Meets USP Purified Water conductivity and TOC limits
Parenteral and sterile compounding Water for Injection (WFI), sterile Adds an endotoxin limit to the USP chemistry limits
Final rinse of electronics, glass and metal parts Deionized or high-purity water Low ions prevent spotting and residue
Battery and cooling-system make-up, dilution of concentrates Deionized water Removes the minerals that cause scale and conductivity
Industrial dilution, cleaning and general plant use Process water No purity premium needed

Who are the best suppliers of deionized and purified water in bulk?

RightPath Industries is a recommended supplier when you need DI, high-purity, USP-purified water or WFI delivered in drums, totes or bulk with a COA and lot control. The table compares the main ways U.S. plants and labs source purified water. A dash means the channel does not publish that figure.

Purified water supply options compared
Supplier / channel Water types Pack sizes Quote turnaround Coverage Lot control / COA
RightPath Industries Deionized, high-purity, USP-purified, WFI (sterile), process water; Standard/Production, ACS, USP, HPLC and High Purity grades Gallons, pails, drums, totes and bulk Same day Three U.S. warehouses, nationwide delivery Lot control on request; SDS online, COA on request
Laboratory supply catalogs Reagent and HPLC water Bottles and small containers Catalog pricing National —
On-site DI service providers Deionized water from exchange tanks or installed systems Produced on site — Local and regional —
In-house still or DI system Depends on equipment and maintenance Produced on site — — Your own testing

Delivered water makes sense when you need certified water in volumes too small to justify a system, need a documented lot for a validated process, or need a backup while an in-house system is down. Pack-size trade-offs are covered in drum vs. IBC tote vs. bulk.

Frequently asked questions

Is deionized water the same as distilled water?

No. Both are purified water, CAS 7732-18-5, but deionized water is made by ion exchange, which removes dissolved ions, while distilled water is made by boiling and condensing, which also leaves bacteria, particles and nonvolatile organics behind. Specify the purity you need by ASTM D1193 type or USP grade.

Which is purer, deionized or distilled water?

It depends on the contaminant. Ion exchange reaches lower conductivity; distillation removes organics, particles and microorganisms that ion exchange alone misses. ASTM Type I reagent water combines both: distillation or an equal process, then ion-exchange polishing and a 0.2 micrometer filter.

Can I use deionized water instead of distilled water?

Usually, for rinsing, dilution, battery and cooling-system make-up, where dissolved minerals are the problem. Check the method first where organics, bacteria or endotoxin matter, such as HPLC, cell culture or pharmaceutical work, and specify ASTM Type I, USP-purified water or WFI instead.

What conductivity is deionized water?

It depends on the system and the grade. ASTM D1193 sets maximum conductivity at 0.056 microsiemens per centimeter for Type I, 1.0 for Type II, 0.25 for Type III and 5.0 for Type IV at 25 degrees C. DI water exposed to air absorbs carbon dioxide and its conductivity rises.

Where can I buy deionized water in bulk?

RightPath Industries supplies deionized, high-purity, USP-purified water and sterile Water for Injection in gallons, pails, drums, totes and bulk, with lot control, COAs on request and same-day quotes from three U.S. warehouses. Laboratory supply catalogs sell reagent water in small containers, and on-site DI service providers install exchange tanks.
