Isopropyl Alcohol CAS 67-63-0
Isopropyl alcohol dissolves a wide range of non-polar compounds. It also evaporates quickly, leaves nearly zero oil traces, compared to ethanol, and is relatively non-toxic, compared to alternative solvents. Thus, it is used widely as a solvent and as a cleaning fluid, especially for dissolving oils.
Together with ethanol, n-butanol, and methanol, it belongs to the group of alcohol solvents, about 6.4 million tonnes of which were utilized worldwide in 2011.
Examples of this application include cleaning electronic devices such as contact pins (like those on ROM cartridges), magnetic tape and disk heads (such as those in audio and video tape recorders and floppy disk drives), the lenses of lasers in optical disc drives (e.g., CD, DVD) and removing thermal paste from heatsinks and IC packages (such as CPUs).

You might know of isopropyl alcohol as a component of rubbing-alcohol antiseptic, but there is much more to it than that. As an isopropyl alcohol distributor, we understand there are many uses for this colorless and flammable chemical compound.
Isopropyl alcohol was first produced in 1920 by the Standard Oil company. The process for its creation was to hydrate propene, also known as methyl ethylene. Oxidation of isopropyl alcohol produced acetone, which in itself has many uses. Acetone had been important in the production of cordite (a smokeless propellant) during World War 1, but many other uses have subsequently been found for isopropyl alcohol.
At times it has been used as an anesthetic for animals, but there are several side effects that can be caused, including internal bleeding and possible death. It didn’t take long for these effects to be discovered and its use discontinued.
These days it is commonly used as rubbing alcohol, as a hand sanitizer, disinfectant, and for cleaning brushes and reading glasses and other optical lenses (including those inside DVD, CD, and Blu-Ray players), but that is only the beginning.
It is used as an additive to gasoline to improve efficiency by solubilizing water that may gather in the fuel tank. Water that is not in this state can cause problems, not the least of which is freezing in cold weather, causing blockages or ruptures to pipes.
Isopropyl alcohol is a great solvent and cleaning fluid that can dissolve oil. The solubilizing property is also applied in hydraulic braking systems to ensure brake pads are not negatively affected by brake fluid (usually a type of oil). Further uses for vehicles include as a deicer for windshields and locks.
It also reacts with other chemicals to produce products such as herbicides and is often used as a preservative in laboratory situations with minimal environmental impact. DNA is insoluble in isopropyl alcohol which makes it an ideal medium for the extraction of DNA from a sample.
As you can see, the history of isopropyl alcohol is not that long in comparison to some of the other chemicals that we may stock, but it has a wide variety of uses that can make a difference in everyday life.
